Dr Ibidun Adelekan of the Department of Geology, University of Ibadan, has called for the involvement of private corporations in the funding of climate research. Adelekan made the call while delivering a lecture on Climate Change, Weather Extremes and Society, at the 17th Faculty Lecture of the institution on Thursday in Ibadan. He said that extreme weather events had the potential to increase in future and expressed optimism that such participation would benefit the society in many respects.
Adelekan noted that the lack of sufficient political will at the state and local government levels to disaster risk reduction had militated against proper management of the impact of climate change in the country.
“A gap therefore, exists between what is currently being done and what should be done by local institutions positioned to address climate change,”he said. He stressed the need for government at all levels to embrace policies that would promote health and education, access to resources and the provision of social insurance for vulnerable population. Adelekan added that for the urban and rural settlements to be effectively addressed, measures targeted toward climate change adaptation and effective institution for disaster management needed to be instituted.
He noted that good local planning and governance would also increase the resilience of vulnerable people and communities to adapt to climate change. “Climate change adaptation should, therefore, be an integral part of wider strategies for poverty reduction and human development, Adelekan said.
